da bwin: Sir Alex Ferguson has hinted that Manchester United may only sign one more player over the summer transfer market adding to speculation over the severity of the clubs financial situation.
da wazamba: Ferguson has already organised deals for Fulham’s Chris Smalling and Mexican striker Javier Hernandez, but clearly in order for the club to compete with the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City they need to invest in proven, top class players.
The loss of Ronaldo and Tevez have been huge to United this season, whether Ferguson would like to admit it or not; particularly the loss of Tevez, who unlike Ronaldo desperately wanted to stay at the club, and is now a fan favourite at arch rivals City and one of the leagues top scorers.
A lot has been made this season of United’s dependence on Wayne Rooney; the England striker has had a phenomenal season, further grounding himself as one of the top players in the world right now. His goal tally this season has undoubtedly helped United from falling even further behind the pace set by Chelsea.
More concern for the team lies in that some of their top performers are now reaching retirement. Giggs and Scholes in particular have had impressive seasons, but surely have no more than a season left in the first team.
Ferguson claims that only one more player is needed to help steady the ship, this tightening of the purse strings points to signs of financial problems, at a stage where United’s top rivals both home and abroad will be spending big this summer. Whoever this final summer signing is, it will have to be a proven international if confidence around Old Trafford is to be restored.
By trusting in the development of the players he already has Ferguson is taking a huge gamble, the likes of Macheda, Gibson and Nani have a huge season ahead of them if they are to be the barers of all hope at United.
If United want to return to the world stage with more than just a Carling Cup next year, they will surely have to spend the money to keep up with their rivals. Ferguson is undoubtedly one of the Worlds finest managers, who can and has turned unproven players into essential team components, but surely a big name is needed to help unload the pressure from Rooney.
