The reality is that for all Manchester City’s riches they are so heavily reliant on Carlos Tevez. The Argentine international is in sensational form netting in 29 of his last 31 games for Manchester City. Had it not been for these goals City may not find themselves above Manchester United in the table and only two points behind leaders Chelsea.
Roberto Mancini raised eyebrows when selecting Tevez as the City captain this season, but Tevez’s selection has been inspired, he has led from the front. Tevez has worked tirelessly for his side and has set a perfect example with his performances this season.
Its hard to see how doubters could argue that at the moment, going forward City are a one man team. No other outfield City player has netted more than once in the league this season. The performance of Adebayor on Sunday was woeful whilst Roque Santa Cruz looks certain to leave in January. Although Mancini went out of his way to praise Emanuel Adebayor after Sunday’s win at Blackpool, it is evident that Mancini has little confidence in the striker and looks a player surplus to big game requirements.
Manchester City due to their lack of goals have to seriously consider the effects that Tevez’s international commitments will have on his game later in the season. Burn out for Tevez is something that Mancini can’t afford to let happen. His manager is clearly worried by the amount that Argentina use Tevez, considering his style of play it is an understandable concern. The Italian will plead with Argentina coach Sergio Batista to leave Tevez out of next months friendly with Brazil, in Doha. ‘Argentina don’t play games in Europe, but in Japan, Australia, Brazil. This makes it difficult for a player. Carlos arrived back on Thursday last week tired and he needs to recover’ Mancini complained.
City fans must be worried by this ultimate reliance of their captain. There is nothing wrong with having a goal scorer or even a world class player but the whole team has to contribute with goals. Mancini’s own comments suggest that he himself is happy to continue to rely on Tevez so long as the striker keeps scoring. Mancini stated after the victory at Bloomfield Road, ‘Offensively it was hard for us at times, but you can see that Carlos just needs a moment to make all the difference.’
The worrying statistic for Manchester City must be the lack of goals from Adam Johnson and David Silva. Silva scored a sublime goal to finish off Blackpool on Sunday but it was his first league goal of the season. Johnson has only netted twice in the league for City since his arrival in January. Mancini prefers to play 4-5-1 so it is imperative that the two wide men add goals for the team. If City are to do more than challenge for the title, the wide men have to be looking to get at least ten goals each this season.
City fans should expect more from their team because they have such an array of talent going forward, high expectations of the players is by no means a bad thing. When Mario Balotelli returns from injury, the burden will be shared with Tevez – an exciting prospect for City fans. Manchester City are without doubt going to challenge for honours this season but either a serious injury or burn out to Tevez may undermine such a challenge for honours.
