da mrbet: According to reports in The Mirror, Manchester United are lining up one last take it or leave it £60m bid in their attempt to land Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Eric Dier this summer.
What’s the word, then?
da realbet: Well, The Mirror says that Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho has been harrying executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward for new signings all summer long after the club finished sixth in the Premier League season but still qualified for the Champions League courtesy of their Europa League success.
One of the positions the Portuguese manager is keen to strengthen is in defensive midfield despite Michael Carrick recently signing a new one-year deal and being named as club captain, and The Mirror says that he wants to land Spurs star Dier.
The reports adds that Mourinho believed that he would be able to prise the 23-year-old away from north London with an offer of £40m and the chance to double his wages, but Tottenham are standing firm on saying the player is not for sale.
United are now ready to launch one final £60m to see if they can tempt their top flight rivals to sell.
How did Dier do last season?
After two impressive campaigns for Spurs in defensive midfield, the England international faced huge competition from Victor Wanyama last term after the Kenyan joined from Southampton last summer.
The 26-year-old quickly went on to make the position his own and Dier ended up making 32 of his 48 appearances in all competitions at centre-back, when Mauricio Pochettino switched to a system incorporating a three-man defence.
Midfield is the former Sporting Lisbon man’s preferred position though and despite signing a new five-year contract with Spurs last September, he could be tempted by the opportunity to play in defensive midfield on a regular basis for United.
Would he be a good signing for United?
He certainly could be.
Even though Carrick has extended his Red Devils contract by another year the 35-year-old is unlikely to play every game in what is set to be another fixture-heavy campaign, and Dier would have the opportunity to make the defensive midfield spot his own.
Of course, the fact that he is versatile and can play at centre-back or right-back if needed is also attractive.
What’s the verdict, then?
Well, while Mourinho clearly wants Dier, £60m is a lot of money for a defensive midfielder and it might not even be a big enough fee to tempt Tottenham to sell.
