da dobrowin: According to reports by Italian media outlet Calciomercato, Wolverhampton Wanderers’ plan to bring Valencia right-back Joao Cancelo to the club this summer is set to die, with Juventus on the verge of bringing the 24-year-old to Serie A after he enjoyed a successful loan spell with their Italian rivals Inter Milan last term.
da 888casino: It is a position that Nuno Santo obviously feels needs strengthening ahead of the west Midlands outfit’s return to the Premier League, but he will have to turn his attentions elsewhere with super-agent Jorge Mendes unable to swing a move in their favour.
It is not really too much of a surprise that the Portuguese boss wants a new right-back/right wing-back given Matt Doherty and Dominic Iorfa are his main options there, and it is a role that could be even more important for them from both a defensive and attacking point of view during the 2018/19 campaign as they look to make their mark on the top flight.
While a deal for Cancelo looks to be dead on the water, there are plenty of other well-known players in that position that could arrive at Molineux and make the impact that Santo and the fans, who have delivered their verdict on a potential move for a 6ft 5in beast, want.
Here are three high-profile right-backs Wolves must target after missing out on Cancelo…
It may seem like an obvious link because he is Portuguese, but Southampton right-back Cedric could be the right-back that Nuno Santo is crying out for.
The 26-year-old Portugal international is quick, impressive defensively, decent going forward and has 86 Premier League appearances under his belt for the south coast outfit.
His future at St Mary’s may not be secure either given he has been there for three years and the club only narrowly avoided relegation to the Championship last term, and a new challenge at Molineux could be just what the doctor ordered.
Had it not been for Djibril Sidibe’s presence at Monaco, then Toure would likely have established himself as the Ligue 1 outfit’s first-choice right-back a long time ago.
However, the 22-year-old has often found himself as the back-up option in that position instead behind the France international, although he did make 27 appearances in all competitions for the French club last term, scoring once and providing a further six assists.
The chance to play regular first-team football with Wolves in the Premier League may be an opportunity that is too good to turn down for the impressive Mali international.
Barcelona signed the Brazilian right-back from Sao Paulo in 2014, but he has made just eight appearances in all competitions for them since then having been sent out on two separate season-long loan deals to Sporting Gijon and then Benfica last term.
Those moves haven’t worked out brilliantly for the 27-year-old as he struggled to get into the Portuguese side’s starting XI during the 2017/18 campaign, but perhaps a permanent move away would be the best thing for him now.
He clearly has something about him having been spotted and signed by Barca, and perhaps Molineux could be the destination where he finally fulfils his potential.
